3 Key Reasons to Upgrade from OpenCart Version 1.5

Posted by AlexDobson on July 13, 2020

We get this question a lot - 'Why should I upgrade from 1.5 to the latest OpenCart version'? Many clients have the age-old attitude of ‘if it ain’t broke, then don’t fix it’. However, delaying an upgrade can have serious consequences for your website. Below I have highlighted the main 3 reasons why you should upgrade from OpenCart version 1.5 to the latest version.

  1. Responsive - this one is vitally important as it was around 7 years ago version 1.5 was released and a lot has changed since then. In technological terms, since then mobile and tablet use has increased twofold and therefore your website would have fallen behind in this regard, if you have not already made it mobile-friendly. The later OpenCart versions are already responsive and therefore something you don’t need to worry about.

  2. Extensions - there are 2 parts to this. B) the latest OpenCart versions have an extension installer in the admin rather than having to upload via FTP. This saves you a lot of time when you want to install an extension. B) you get the choice of a lot more extensions in the OpenCart store as many extensions are not compatible with 1.5.

  3. Security - another very key feature and one that our partners at Astra have talked about many times. We have seen more hacks on older sites than newer ones. It is likely that the code is old and not been touched for a while which leaves your site very vulnerable. In addition, the hacking skills of hackers have increased twofold since 2013 and if your site hasn’t advanced then it makes it easier to break into.

If the above has swayed you enough to get an estimate to upgrade from 1.5 to the latest version of OpenCart, then please do email us at info@antropy.co.uk.
