Mozilla App Store - Mozilla Marketplace

Posted by Paul on February 24, 2012

Mozilla, the non-profit behind the legendary Firefox browser have announced plans to build their own app store called Mozilla Marketplace in direct competition with the Apple and Android stores.

Development has begun and they expect it will be ready later this year (2012).

Mozilla hope that the app store will give mobile users more choice and free them of the "vendor lock-in" and stringent controls imposed by Apple's App Store and other proprietary app stores.

By allowing apps to be developed with JavaScript/HTML5, the aim is to be totally based on open standards and therefore as compatible as possible across all platforms.

It would already be possible to build apps this way of course but Mozilla aim to develop a system that executes the code at a very low level and therefore have performance as good as a native app.
