Retail is Dead. Long Live Etail!

Posted by Paul on February 1, 2013

The economy is changing fast. The global credit crisis has been hard on any inefficiencies and some of the old retail business models are dead. Meanwhile, ecommerce is booming.

The reality is that high-street retailers just can't compete with online retailers (etailers). Low overheads (and therefore prices), convenient shopping experience and great customer service all contribute to the attraction.

Here are some of the casualties so far:

  • Blockbuster
  • HMV
  • Jessops
  • Comet
  • JJB Sports
  • Clinton Cards
  • Aquascutum
  • Ellie Louise
  • Game Group
  • Peacocks
  • Pumpkin Patch
  • Past Times
  • Blacks Leisure
  • Hawkin's Bazaar
  • D2 Jeans
  • Barratts
  • La Senza
  • Jane Norman
  • Habitat
  • Focus DIY
  • Homeform
  • TJ Hughes

It's likely that the high-street will begin to contain just the businesses that really can't be done online (yet!). Coffee shops, some clothes shops, shoe shops, restaurants, newsagents.
