What Website Layout Should I Use?

It depends what industry you're in!

Something interesting we came across recently was that websites in certain industries seem to often follow a similar layout to each other. Below are some examples:

Corporates

These tend to have the logo top left, a header image, the navigation across the top and then the text below divided in to columns, perhaps with a sidebar.

Architects

Often these are quite minimalistic and sit as a rectangle in the centre of the screen. They are often all Flash and have simple navigation on one side which changes the content in the middle.

Restaurants

These tend to be similar to corporates in layout but often with very large images of delicious food in the background and other elements on the page are often carefully designed too.

Fashion

Often a very thin area of navigation makes way for a large area to display the clothes with some sort of thumbnail driven navigation through the clothes.
